Yields: Makes 2 Dozen Donuts.
Ingredients
- 5 cups of vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 4 ½ teaspoons of baking powder
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ¼ cup of unsalted butter
For the Glaze
- 1 ½ cup of confectioners’ sugar
- 3 to 4 tablespoons of whole milk
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
Method of Preparation
- Start by making the glaze. Sift the sugar in a medium bowl.
- Stir in the milk and extract until the glaze is smooth. Thin the glaze by adding additional milk, if needed.
- Cover the glaze in plastic wrap and set aside.
- Add the oil to a large, heavy-bottomed pot. Bring the oil to 350º F using medium heat.
- Line a plate with paper towels.
- Whisk the milk and egg together in a small bowl.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Stir in the egg mixture.
- Add the melted butter and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Use an ice cream scoop to drop portions of the dough into the pan. Fry in batches for about 2 minutes. The donut holes should turn a golden brown color.
- Transfer the fried donut holes to the plate lined with paper towels.
- Allow the donuts to cool slightly, then drop them in the glaze.
- Set them on a wire rack to allow the excess glaze to drip off. Serve warm.
